I chose the theme “How has Spanish affected you in and outside of school?” The essays I got back really moved and surprised me. Many students wrote that studying another language had made them better students in general and helped their grade average. They spoke of specifics like the transfer of grammatical concepts from Spanish to English. They had become aware of roots of words and cognates. Of course, they mentioned that Spanish was useful in Mexican restaurants and in family trips to Cancún and Costa Rica.
