Symposium: Study Abroad
February - International Engagement
Objective: VBCPS students will be able to exchange information with college students who have a broader view of the world.
The 2005 Year of Languages (YOL) committee members arranged with Dr. Susan Wansink, professor of German and French at Virginia Wesleyan College (VWC) and a YOL committee member, to have a symposium on studying abroad on February 22, 2005. Dr. Wansink arranged to have VWC host the event and invited the panel of VWC students who had experiences in one of the following countries: Italy, Spain, France, Germany, Japan, Mexico, and Holland.
Rick Hinshaw, VP for Enrollment Management and Dean of Admissions, gave the opening remarks, and Dr. Wansink introduced the panel. The panelists gave insight into living and studying in countries other than the US.
The success of the symposium was evident by the manner in which VBCPS students continued to converse with VWC students after the symposium. Additionally, one of the VBCPS Japanese teachers, Tae Murakoshi, invited the panelist who spoke about Japan to be a guest speaker for her VBCPS Japanese students.
The symposiium was videotaped.
